Every year on October 1st, the international day is intended to celebrate coffee and recognize the millions of people around the world: farmers, roasters, baristas, coffeehouse owners and more, who work hard to create and serve the drink we love.
International Coffee Organization dedicates the focus of the 2020 edition to a collective mission to help coffee farmers around the world to receive a fair and viable income with the program Coffee’s next generation to specifically support the next generation of young producers.
Catarina explains it better:
In case you are interested, here is a small summary of some scheduled events:
Starbucks Reserve Roastery Milan offers a coffee tasting of the “Anniversary Blend” but pay attention to the specific time slots: from 9 a.m. to 9.30, from 11 a.m. to 11.30, from 2 p.m. to 2.30 and from 4 p.m. to 4.30, excluding the Malpensa Terminal 1 and Cordusio premises.
Talent Garden Calabiana organizes an outdoor community breakfast sponsored by Lavazza.
Cimbali will host the first live broadcast of the Italian Coffee Network full of interviews, demonstrations and webinars in collaboration with the trainers of the Mumac Academy, organized by Istituto Espresso Italiano, SCA Italy and Consorzio di Tutela del Caffé Espresso.
On the other hand, at Caffé Gambrinus, the From the bean to the cup event has unfortunately been canceled.
Just as on the Milano Caffè website nothing appears.
And it is a real shame because never before would it be appropriate to encourage the cafes that have been particularly affected.
For this reason I find the initiative of La Genovese Caffé nice: Offer a coffee to your bartender which proposes to overturn the roles leaving for once a suspended coffee for the one who prepares it, in order to express closeness and sympathy.
Or more simply as indicated here
On October 1st, World Coffee Day, users are invited to take a photo or screenshot of their coffee date and post it and tag @juliusmeinlofficial to support a global cause.
For each contribution that uses the @juliusmeinlofficial tag during the campaign period, be it a comment, post or story, Julius Meinl will contribute € 1 (or the equivalent in USD) in support of Worldreader up to a total of 11,534 $ (Eleven Thousand Five One hundred and thirty-four US dollars).
Another BEAUTIFUL THING is: Meet with a poem!
Among other things, speaking of poems, I could tag important friends.
The explanation of the initiative appears on the website: Julius Meinl who is the organizer and foresees a poem to be written together with a dear friend to receive two special coffees in exchange.
But ours are always special coffees, right !?
2023
I learn something new on your blog every day, Claudia; For example, I did not know that the 1st of October is the “International Coffee Day”. For me, every day is ca offee day. Without coffee I would hardly survive …
Thanks Olivia!!
For me too, every day is coffee day!
Your slogan is GREAT!!
Since you asked for a poem in your text, I am sending you my first “coffee haiku”:
Such heavenly joy
A cup full of hot coffee
sweet with cinnamon
Olivia!!!!
THANK YOU so so much!
Your haiku is simply perfect!
<3
Here is my second “coffee haiku” for you, Claudia:
Lovely Moscow
Drinking hot coffee at the
Magnolia shop
Lovely YOU!
It is half past midnight in Moscow. Morning is coming soon, and here is my morning coffee haiku for you, Claudia:
Heavenly morning
Early up in the kitchen
With a good coffee
Olivia !! <3
Such a BEAUTIFUL thought and such a special good morning deserves a great answer!
THANKS THANKS THANKS!
I love Luciano Pavarotti’s voice, a marvellous singer.
I got up very early this morning, so this is my “coffee haiku” for today:
Drink a thousand cups
Of coffee in your life
To greet the morning
These are for all your cups!
THANK YOU SO MUCH Olivia!
This is a beautiful photo, Claudia, all those cups and flowers, arranged in a circle. It is a coffee mandala.
This inspires me to send you one more “coffee haiku” for the day. There was a bit of rain this afternoon in Moscow, so here we go:
Soft rain in Moscow
Whispering on the roof top
My coffee answers
Dear dear dear Olivia!!
Wishful thinking, I do not have any kittens, but in my imagination they are here:
Three little kittens
Treading around my coffee
With sniffs and meows
A really beautiful image.
Kittens and coffee: perfect!!
I don’t think that cats like coffee but they certainly like to sit or lie on the table. They will take any excuse to do that.
Here is another animal, the “hero” of my coffee haiku:
A tiny fly flew
Into my cup of coffee
Poor fly she drowned
Oh poor fly.
Surely cats like doing what they prefer.
Surely cats are able to take their time.
Surely cats are like perpetual coffee mood 🙂
Cats are fascinating in every way, Claudia.
Finally the summer heat has reached Moscow. We had up to 32 degrees in the afternoon.
Coffee ritual
A cup a spoon a table
Afternoon delight
Thank You so so much Olivia!!
This Coffee Ritual is pure delight for sure!
32 degrees?! Isn’t it much for Moscow?
Here is very hot as well, more than usual for the end of June.
Yesterday and today we had 32 degrees, tomorrow the weather forecast has predicted 26 degrees in Moscow.
I am enjoying my coffee anyhow, in cold or in warm weather. Here is my next “coffee haiku”:
Aura of coffee
Greetings from Colombia
Wafting through my room
All over the world
Coffee drinkers unite
Up up and away
Good morning to news
Sweet cinnamon in coffee
Will circle with joy
A circle, or rather a globe of joy is mine when I receive all these wonderful haiku of yours as a gift!
Thousand and thousand thanks Olivia!!
You are welcome, Claudia. I find writing haikus a joyful and relaxing activity. Especially writing coffee haikus is a great pleasure for me. I am glad you appreciate them. Staying with the theme of “joy”:
The scent of coffee
Wakes me up from my dream
Of eternal joy
The scent of coffee is always a good awakening!
Dreams of eternal joy are something I share with you and together we hope they don’t stop, coffee can just be a great break;)
Doomsday oracle
Never mind says the coffee
Drink and be happy
Drink and be happy!
THANKS Olivia !! I always need to hear never mind.
Yes!
I really like the song “Don’t worry, be happy”.
My personal version is “Don’t worry, drink coffee” or
“Drink coffee, be happy”.
But Olivia is GREAT !!
Your version is really perfect !!
THANKS <3
I should make a jingle out of it 🙂
Coffee truly makes me happy, even euphoric sometimes.
What would we do without coffee? Would we even exist?
Let the stars shine
At night while I dream of
My morning coffee
Oh this TOP!!!
Coffee idea linked with happiness and with dreams!
Could it be better than that?!
Thank you so much dear Olivia!!
<3
Nothing can be better than that, absolutely nothing at all, Claudia.
I do not need a
Midsummer Night’s Dream as much
As morning coffee
It may sound pragmatic yet it is totally real as well as absolutely true.
THANKS Olivia, I must definitely learn to be more practical.
Me too, me too, Claudia. I was very idealistic in my younger years, now I have become totally pragmatic. I stay away from anything that could disturb my daily life and writing routine. What I need, however, is my daily coffee. Without that I could not exist, no, not at all.
Cars rolling along
This avenue in Moscow
It’s coffee time
Interesting your writing routine!
So you are able to constantly devote a certain amount of time each day to writing I suppose. Fantastic!
Like coffee time 🙂
Yes, Claudia. I spend most of the day reading, researching and writing. It comes to me naturally, it is no effort at all but a passion. I believe I was born to be a writer.
The only interruptions I allow myself are a few hours set aside for Russian lessons.
White walls blue dots
In my language school and
plenty of coffee
Surely you were born to be a writer, it is perfectly understood that for you it is as natural as breathing.
And you also have an extreme generosity: you give me all these beautiful haiku of yours!
THANKS Olivia !!
I like sharing haikus with you, Claudia.
It is a poetic way of expressing and exchanging feelings, moods, thoughts.
Karetny Ryad
And Garden Rind and me and
My cup of coffee
And I really love receiving the gift of your haiku Olivia!
THANKS THANKS THANKS.
I looked for Karetny Ryad and Garden Ring, are they two hotels?
Karetny Ryad is a street, in the North West of Moscow, where Ermitage Park is located, my favourite park in Moscow.
The Garden Ring is a big boulevard encircling the centre of Moscow. A bus rides along Garden Ring in both directions, so this is a nice way to get to know the centre of Moscow. I often ride on the bus along Garden Ring, just for the pleasure of looking out of the window and getting to know all the different sights …
Wow how beautiful this Garden ring is! An excellent urban and also logistic solution: I imagine the convenience of traveling with that bus.
Coffee drinkers united is awesome Olivia!!
It could be a subtitle for the blog!
Ich danke dir sehr <3
Well, I meant it as an allusion to Lenin’s “Workers of all countries, unite!” It is also good as a subtitle for your blog. I am curious what your answer will be to this one, Claudia:
In a war between
Tea and coffee who will win
God only knows that
A drop of coffee
Spilled on the page of
My Russian book
Maybe even the coffee wanted to read 🙂
The coffee wanted to read Russian, since it is such a beautiful language. This is an erudite coffee, Claudia.
Of course!
I would like to read Russian too.
You can, if you study it.
I really hope so.
I really hope to be able to study it someday.
I love studying, it is one of the activities I prefer in life.
Perfect summer day
Russian book on the bench
Next to my coffee
Olivia this is something we have in common: I love studying as well!
And I hope to have one day the chance to live that perfect summer day with the Russian book.
Thanks!
You are most welcome, Claudia.
I just received your good news that you found a new job and are working again. Congratulations!
My morning coffee
Clearing the mind and the soul
Gives me wisdom
And you have a lot of wisdom!
THANK YOU very much Olivia!
Thank you for the compliment, Claudia. You have wisdom, too. That is why I enjoy having this correspondence with you. By the way, I am very happy that you have found work again and like it. It is so important that we like our daily work, isn’t it? I, for example, am a retired teacher. Now I like writing articles and haikus. Here we go again:
Early morning light
Stillness of trees in the yard
And my coffee sings
Too good Olivia! THANK YOU!!
Yes: I also find it very important to do a job that we like, because work takes up a considerable considerable part of our lives, and also because doing something we love is never too heavy.
Your coffee sings just like the lark in the morning.
And this haiku made me think of Romeo and Juliet.
My coffee loves to look at the blue sky, enjoying the good weather in July. My coffee and I, we both love the month of July. What is your favourite month, Claudia?
Blue skies white clouds
Above my hot coffee
July in Moscow
I also love summer.
I like June because it represents a promise of what’s to come.
I like July because the daylight lasts a long time and it is as if you could live longer days.
I like August because here the city empties and it is the time of the year when I can feel it more like my home.
But I also like December.
You have named very good reasons to like June, July and August, Claudia. I like all three of them, I could not say which I like best. Summer, all in all, is a wonderful season. I appreciate it a lot.
Golden rays of sun
Dance on the Garden Ring
Coffee dances too
And I dance with coffee <3
Thank you so much dear Olivia!
I agree: Summer, all in all, is a wonderful season, and you are a wonderful writer.
Thank you for the compliment, Claudia. I truly enjoy writing, this is what I like best.Second best is drinking a cup of coffee, third best is smelling a new lovely perfume …
My new perfume
“Kuznetsky Most” smells as sweet
As my dear coffee
Fantastic!! I would definitely like this perfume too! Does the name have a particular meaning?
Oh wow!
This is difficult!
Let’s say I cheer for coffee but tea also deserves all respect.
Since I don’t like wars, I wish there were no winners or losers, just freedom of choice.
I like both, coffee and tea. Each has its own time.
Today was another warm day in Moscow, 31 degrees in the afternoon.
Looking at the sun
The coffee in my cup will
Suddenly tremble
Making the sun tremble is no small feat!
THANK YOU very much Olivia! Your haiku are wonderful.
Actually, I meant it the other way around: The sun made my coffee tremble in the cup. But you can interprete it either way, of course.
Sorry, you are right!
I’m the one who always puts coffee in the center …;) 🙂
Why not put coffee in the centre? It is a very important drink. When I cannot get my coffee in the morning I am very grumpy.
<3
Yes, it is a very important drink, thanks!
With “grumpy” you make me think of the blog Grumpy Olive, do you already know it?
No, I do not know Grumpy Olive. But I am Grumpy Olivia, when things go wrong, for example this here:
I scream angrily
Who has stolen my coffee
May God punish you
Legitimate!
One SHOULD NOT STEAL coffee from others. 🙂
No! One should never steal!
Drinking my coffee
While thoughts are bothering
Always the same
In a haiku you outline a very important theme Olivia.
True: sometimes thoughts are botheing, when they bring anguish, when they are nagging in bringing fears and worries, when they chain us to negative emotions.
I try to be stoic about nagging thoughts, negative emotions. They will pass. Let them pass. I like the way cats seem to be stoic about life.
My neighbour’s cat keeps
Me company in the yard
When I drink coffee
I also love the attitude of cats very much, they have a way of doing that seems to say “if the world fell I would move a little further there.”
And I really admire your attitude in the face of negative thoughts: unfortunately many times am not able to do the same.
You will with time, Claudia, it is a question of age. In my younger days I often could not cope well with negative thoughts or situations. With the years, I have become more stoic. Not so many things touch me any more, for example the loud noise of children. Although I like children, I prefer it when they are far away and not disturbing my quiet thoughts.
How calm the park is
Today no children playing
I drink my coffee
This makes me very happy: I hope to achieve at least a shred of your wisdom.
I am not afraid of the years, on the contrary, I really appreciate what time has given me and taught me so far.
I am glad you are not afraid of the years, Claudia. I am not afraid either. Every year is a gift of God, a present for us to survive here on Earth and do our best to make it beautiful and inhabitable.
Survival is cheap
With enough ground coffee in
The survival pack
Well said Olivia: life is a gift and the time we have available is by no means taken for granted.
Right.
There are times when tea is more suitable.
“Five o’clock tea” – a very nice and civilized English habit.
Yes, tea is truly inseparable from England.
Have you ever been to England? Have you ever tried five o’clock tea?
Yes, I have been to England many times. The first time with 16, I went to summer school in the south of England and stayed with a family there. After that I went to Scotland, I had an exchange family in Edinburgh. My exchange partner’s name was Andie. She got married in Australia later. In the 1970s, I lived for one year in London. I was stationed there by Panamerican Airways. I have had five o’clock tea often and I truly love it. It is one of the things I like best in England.
Super wow!! Your life has been really full filled with very beautiful and interesting experiences!!
Really heartfelt congratulations, dear Olivia.
Scotland then … I imagine it to be magical, a bit like Ireland.
I got around a lot, I must admit.
Now I live more quietly, even a bit lazy, lol …
Lazy afternoon
Summer siesta with a
Hot cup of coffee
Oh I can’t imagine you lazy Olivia, just see how many haiku you can write just for me!
THANK YOU!!
Oh, yes, I love to have my afternoon siesta, except for two afternoons in the week, when I have school.
Silent trees stand still
The window open and my
Coffee is warbling
With this lovely haiky you make me learn a new word: warbling.
It think it’s one of the words able to express the sound they represent.
Isn’t it?!
GRAZIE Olivia!!
Yes, Claudia. Birds are warbling, and coffee can warble, too.
We are in the middle of July now. This is a wonderful season.
Flowering blossoms
Raise their heads to the sky
And to my coffee
I agree with you Olivia!
This is a wonderful season and the days are slipping away too fast.
True, Claudia! Summer is such a great season. I love it, and I also think it is always slipping away too fast, especially here in Russia, with its short summers and long winters.
So let’s enjoy it, while it lasts!
Whitish-pink roses
Nod good morning to my first
Cinnamon coffee
Right Olivia!
Let’s enjoy this summer and fill up on sunshine and warmth for when winter arrives with its gray and dark days.
Carpe Diem!
Rose and cinnamon.
Something beautiful and something good, both scented.
Scented roses are wonderful, Claudia. I love rose perfume. There are some wonderful roses in the parks of Moscow. I especially like this one:
Red roses blooming
In the park Ermitage
I need a coffee
I imagine the beauty of this park in Moscow.
Blooming is always a gift, for the eyes but not only: blooming is a symbol.
I need a coffee too 🙂
Yes, please have a coffee, Claudia. We need coffee at every time of the day, it keeps us healthy and sane.
The Park Ermitage is lovely in summer, children love it, I love it, dogs and cats and pidgeons are also in love with this park. I do not know anybody who does not admire this park …
Balls are flying
Children shouting or crying
But I drink coffee
So I try to imagine you in this park, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the life that animates the games of children and people with their dogs or their moments of relaxation.
While children are playing ball, I am working on a new haiku, sitting on a bench in the Ermitage Park, trying to concentrate:
Writing a haiku
Is much more difficult
Than drinking coffee
True!
Drinking coffee is easy.
Children give joy and smiles but sometimes they steal concentration 🙂
Oh well, so did you have a cooler day? Here gray clouds arrived but in the end again no rain and very, very hot.
Fortunately, the aura of coffee is there for us!
I reciprocate the greetings to Colombia!
Today, Tuesday, we had torrents of rain in Moscow. There were huge puddles of water in the street. I had to slalom around them. The sun was barely to be seen.
Behind dense clouds
A hint of rays will shine
Into my coffee
And this ray reaches here and illuminates my happy smile.
No rain for us, just a few clouds yesterday, and a lot of humid heat.
It rains nearly every day here in Moscow, not for very long, just a few showers, once in a while. The temperature is nice, between 22 and 28 degrees, just good and moderate. I love it.
It is early in the morning, half past five. I am drinking my early morning coffee with cinnamon and eating a bit of “tworog”, which is a sort of white cheese, like cottage cheese, crumbly and delicious. So here we go, Claudia:
Eating a tworog
Will be enough to make
The coffee cup laugh
Wow rain every day!
It never rains here …
Do you know I’ve never heard of the Tworog before?
And I also find it very interesting because here we don’t have the habit of eating cheese in the morning, so it would certainly be a tasty experience.
THANK YOU!
Tworog does not really taste like cheese at all, more like cottage cheese or a sort of thick yoghurt. I like it at any time of day, morning, noon, evening, even midnight.
I think I would certainly like it too. I love yogurt. I make myself kefir every morning.
I love kefir too. It tastes nice and cool in summer.
And I love other food too, for example Italian pasta. Ah, so delicious!
Pasta and salad
A hot potato and a
Cup of coffee
Yummy!
I am so glad to read that you love Italian pasta!!
Is there a particular recepy you prefer?
Not really. I love Italian pasta in general. Sometimes I prefer spaghetti Bolognese, at other times gnocchi with pesto sauce. All recipies are really delicious.
PS
But all in all, I love nothing as much as COFFEE because I am a COFFEE ADDICT!
Again and again
One two three four five
A coffee addict
Wow! I read these words of yours with my eyes to heart!
They are music to my ears 🙂
THANK YOU!
“Music to my ears”, yes! Certain sounds are like music, for example this one here:
Presence of sound
In the kitchen with coffee
bubbling and boiling
You write “bubbling coffee in the kitchen” and I immediately imagine the mocha on the stove.
You are right, the sound of the coffee rising in the pot is extremely pleasant.
Coffee, all kinds of coffee, make wonderful sounds, Claudia. I even like the sound of coffee drinkers slurping their coffee, although in general I do not tolerate slurping. But slurping coffee is such an expression of joy, of wellbeing ….
Pidgeons in the yard
Picking and waiting for crumbs
Coffee for you too?
Olivia you are poetic even before you write haiku!
“Slurping coffee is such an expression of joy, of wellbeing ….” simply perfect words.
“Slurping” is not very elegant, it is not ladylike, my dear mother would certainly have disapproved! Since she is dead, she cannot disapprove any more, so I slurp as much as I like. Maybe my dear, beloved Mum is watching me from high up in Heaven, shaking her head in dismay? Such a naughty daughter, and she tried so hard to make a lady out of me …
Green grass in the park
Ermitage is waiting
For me with coffee
I don’t think your mom looking at you from the sky is dismayed, not even by the slurping. I am more than sure that she is very proud of the Woman that you are, and she smiles.
My mum rarely smiled at me, she mostly had a critical look. It was her nature. Maybe she has changed her habit in heaven, has become a bit more lenient now? Anyway, I enjoy my life as it is, whether my dear mum approves it or not ….
I am a big girl now ….
I am grown up (or nearly) …
While the morning
Sun kisses the earth I kiss
My morning coffee
You are a great woman and not everyone knows how to enjoy life as it is and with the awareness of being yourself without remorse or regrets.
I am really happy to read this!
In fact, even for me it is difficult to choose.
Sometimes choices are difficult but need to be made! Definitely! Here is my choice:
Coffee is better
Than icecream it will not
Make you too fat
And here is another one of my choices, Claudia:
My cup of coffee
Tastes as sweet as love
Or even better
WOW Olivia!
This is really an apotheosis!
THANK YOU
Yes, definitely an “apotheosis”, Claudia.
Are you enjoying the summer?
I certainly am, I love summer.
Summer is here
Walking with coffee in the
Park Ermitage
Yes, I am enjoying the summer, despite the very hot days we have had, although in general it is not a good time, I do not want to waste the moments when I can enjoy the sun, the sky, the light until late in these long daylights, and I try to find the light-heartedness in the representation of the full life that summer offers.
I also do not like the heat, Claudia. The summer morning is the best time of day for me, when the air is still fresh:
My cup of coffee
A good treat on fresh mornings
Early in Moscow
I also like the early morning hours: when the air is fresh and there is still silence.
In the apartment where we lived before, I loved going to drink coffee on the balcony.
You’re right: choosing can be difficult, but it has to be done. I still have a lot to learn!
Indecision is my fault.
I believe that indecision is not really a “fault”, Claudia, it is a state of mind. When the decision is ripe, we make take it.
“Your ticket please”
The bus is rattling along
As I drink coffee
I’ve never drank coffee on the bus!
Mythical!
I am always careful not to spill it, but once it happened anyhow:
I spilled coffee
On my new dress oh my god
How could I do that
These things happen! If you only knew how many I have combined! I’m a real walking disaster.
Thanks dear Olivia! You always console me!
Generally people consider indecision a flaw, but I will try to make myself strong by thinking of you who define it as a state of mind. You are right. <3
Indecision is very common, Claudia, it is nothing to be ashamed of. Sometimes it is necessary, especially when we are standing at a crossroads of our life. Then the moment of indecision is a last moment to consider whether we are going on in the right direction. Artists and writers often experience moments of indecision. When the right time comes, the right decision will be made. I am sure of that.
This is what I admire in cats, they never feel indecision, they are always in the right place at the right time:
My neighbour’s cat keeps
Me company in the yard
When I drink coffee
Cats truly have the gift of making their indifference like a super power.
Thanks Olivia!
You console me a lot and instill confidence in me. it is nice to hear a voice different from all those who generally judge indecision only as a defect.
